This Artist Is So Great That She Can Really Draw a Crowd, and Now, You Can See Her for Yourself

Lily Cox-Richard’s sculpture engages familiar forms and materials that have become unmoored from their original contexts and roles. She mines this distance by digging into their cultural and materials histories and forging new paths between them. Lily Cox-Richard will create a new sculpture installation and intervention that embeds the specifics of place (including debris and litter) in ubiquitous building materials.

The work included in Berm will fuse intensively crafted objects, found materials, and cast concrete to challenge assumptions of positioning. Cox-Richard will also invert the gallery’s privileged space by making the sidewalk outside the gallery, and its low, floor-level windows the prime vantage point for the work.

This project expands Cox-Richard’s investigations into the relationships between natural resources, stewardship, labor, landscape, and the built environment in the rapidly developing area of Midtown Houston. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by adults (sculptures include glass). We can’t wait to see you there!
