With Over 72 Vendors, the Annual Zine Fest Houston Is the Place to Be

As the legend goes, in the ancient days of 1993 CE, a group of zine elders gathered together to show off the latest issues of their zines at Hermann Park. Over the next two decades, the event now known as Zine Fest Houston slowly grew and evolved into the multi-headed hydra it is today; with workshops, compilations and comix anthologies, community outreach and fundraising events creating a year-round celebration of self-publishing culminating in the festival itself.

This year the annual Zine Fest Houston event will be at Lawndale Art Center on Saturday, November 19 from 2-8pm! Zine Fest Houston 2016 is open to the public free of charge and all ages are welcome. With 72 vendors and over 1,000 attendees in 2015, the fest continues to grow apace and 2016 promises to be its biggest year ever.

Programming scheduled during the day includes: a conversation centered on Black Lives Matter, DIY publishing and activism, a Q&A with Paraspace Book founders Sara Balabanlilar and Sarah Rodriguez, a lecture about Scott Gilbert and the comic strip True Artist Tales with Robert Boyd, and a presentation on Wild Dog Archives with Nancy and Tayvis Dunnahoe. In addition, there will be raffles for ZFH swag and zine workshops for kids and teens! Featured food vendors outside include Food Music Life and Ed’s Sno Cones. The TOMO Mags bus will also be present!

Zine Fest Houston is a local volunteer-based organization and annual event dedicated to promoting zines, comics, and other forms of small press, alternative, underground DIY media and art. It is also a grassroots attempt to build the local zine, DIY, and alternative media scenes and form networks with media creators in other areas. ZFH is committed to providing accessible space to celebrate self-publishing and small presses, encouraging the distribution of independent art, writing, and media primarily through the medium of zines. The goal of the event is for attendees to discover new zines and be inspired to create their own DIY art and media projects.
