Learn More About Eastern Cultures at This Thought-Provoking Exhibit

Catherine Colangelo’s work gives nod to traditions that existed long before our time. Her paintings stem from a visual vocabulary as varied as illuminated manuscripts, Indian and Islamic miniatures, textiles, and visionary art. These vibrant and unusual works are painstakingly created with graphite and gouache on muslin, using a process of concentration and skill that is also comforting and meditative.

Her 2017 solo exhibition, Talismanic, explores the idea of shields, or protective objects, seen to act as talismans or charms which ward off evil, while simultaneously bringing good fortune. The works are impeccably detailed and provide the artist’s vision and knowledge. They encompass the values of motherhood and evoke the role of protector that one must assume over her children.

Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on display through February 4.
